It's FLASH - just a simple reflection effect. View the non-flash version here: [link]

This is my Round 7 entry in :iconotakusenshiidols: - Swimsuit | Previous rounds: [link]

A TYPICAL SUMMER DAY

In between ballet classes and rehearsals, Odette spends the hot NYC summers indoors, reading in her cool apartment, visiting the MOCA or shopping with her friends at boutiques. Odette doesn’t like being outdoors in the summer; the humidity makes her very uncomfortable. She especially dislikes the beach – the sand gets everywhere and drives her crazy, and there’s way too much bacteria in the ocean; she would never think of entering it. Plus, Odette does not know how to swim.

SUMMER VACATION

After her confrontation with Dark Sailor Lyra, Odette consulted Cygnetta via her Cygnus Brooch.

“Why didn’t you respond to me?” she asked.

“It’s my duty to protect Sailor Cygnus. If you’re going to continue to resist your responsibilities, I’m not going to rescue you. You’ve got to grow into your role on your own.”

“I accept,” sighed Odette. “I don’t want anyone else to get hurt.”

“We must return to the Citadel and declare our allegiance to the White Queen of the Moon.”

“I’m not ready to choose a side yet. I need to know more about each kingdom to make an informed decision. Where was the Moon Kingdom when Galaxia attacked me? Just because my mother danced for the Royal Court doesn’t mean we should blindly serve the Moon.”

“Suit yourself. I can’t make the choice for you.” Frustrated, Cygnetta vanished.

That night, Odette has another strange dream. She was standing in the middle of a lake, dressed in a feathered swimsuit and holding the Cygnus Brooch. A gentle breeze caressed her, and as the Brooch slipped from her fingers, she stared into the rippling water at her reflection. An unfamiliar shadowy figure smiled back at her. As she reached into the water to retrieve the Brooch, the shadow grabbed her hand and pulled her underwater. Odette gasped for air as darkness engulfed her.

She woke to rays of sunlight piercing her bedroom. Odette didn’t have classes on the weekend, so she grabbed her phone and sent a quick message to Oksana and Renata.

*Sorry, can’t go shopping today. Something came up – going upstate. TTYL*

She shut off her phone and took the Cygnus Brooch, placing it on her dresser. Odette stood in front of the mirror, contemplating her reflection and the meaning of the strange dream. She took a deep breath.

“Sailor Enigma, I want you to take me to the Two Kingdoms.”

ARTIST NOTES

:bulletgreen: Process: Odette was drawn and colored traditionally, outlined with Micron Pens and colored with Prismacolor Pencils. Originally, I wanted the whole piece to be Traditional + Flash, but after completing a sample traditional piece, I wasn't happy with the paper texture, especially on darker tones. The final piece is Traditional + Photoshop (for the background, feathers, glow) + Flash (reflection)

:bulletgreen: Credits: I really wanted to capture the soft, watercolor feel of Naoko's original manga pieces. Odette's pose was loosely based on this image of Hotaru [link] However, I have such a lead hand and feel the lines are too heavy.

:bulletgreen: The Swimsuit: This was the hardest part, since Odette really has no reason to ever wear a swimsuit. A surreal dream scenario seemed the best alternative, and I get incorporate a Swan Lake allusion - it makes sense for Odette to dream about being in a lake. Her "swimsuit" is highly stylized, to match the otherworldly environment of a dream, but it is based on a real Herve Leger design: [link]

:bulletgreen: Final Thoughts: I know I am taking a lot of risks with this piece, but to put Odette in a happy beach/pool scenario is so out of character that I chose to adapt the theme to the character, instead of going out of character to interpret the theme literally. By presenting a non-traditional interpretation of the theme, I am advancing my character's development, and a lot of thought went into satisfying the requirements of the theme while staying true to Odette's character and story. It is my hope that this creativity is recognized.

Thank You! I toyed with the idea of redoing the linework and color (I improvised a lightbox from a glass top table & desk lamp) but I have been so busy with work that I barely had time to get this entry in by the deadline. It was a struggle to work with the scanned image "as is" and not have the freedom to fix lines in Illustrator like I'm used to.
